  • When MGM National Harbor reopens to the public on Monday, prospective guests can expect 'contactless' check-ins, single-use baccarat cards and Plexiglass galore to guard against COVID-19.
  • While it has not been proven to be an actual plan for the future of one of Las Vegas’ most powerful casino conglomerates, there is an alleged plan for the opening of the MGM Resorts properties.

OXON HILL, MD. (WJZ) — MGM National Harbor will reopen to the general public at 6 a.m. on Monday, June 29 after it closed down earlier this year due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Two other Maryland casinos operate within 45 miles from of MGM National Harbor: the Horseshoe Casino Baltimore, operated by Caesars Entertainment Corps., and Maryland Live!, owned by the Cordish.

“The last several months have been challenging for the entire world, including our employees and the surrounding DMV community. As we enter this next phase, we are proud and excited to begin getting our employees back to work and to continue working with our local business partners,” said Jorge Perez, MGM Resorts Regional Portfolio President and President of MGM National Harbor. “The health and safety of our guests and employees is our top priority as we plan for our reopening, and we look forward to welcoming everyone back for some much-needed entertainment.”

Per Gov. Larry Hogan’s guidelines when he announced reopening earlier this month, they will open at a 50 percent capacity limit.

After closing their doors in March to help stop the spread of coronavirus, MGM National Harbor's team has been looking forward to a day when it will reopen.

MGM Resorts International rolled out a blueprint Tuesday of the changes that visitors will likely see when they return to MGM's properties.

When will MGM National Harbor reopen?

Prince George's County Executive Angela Alsobrooks is cautious while her county is continuing to battle the virus. A reopening date for entertainment venues like MGM National Harbor is still to be determined.

The county has seen nearly 10,000 cases of COVID-19 and 327 deaths as of Monday. Although the county is among the top 3 percent of counties practicing social distancing in the state, it's also experienced the highest number of 'imported' cases of coronavirus, from visitors, according to the University of Maryland, which is tracking mobile phone data to compile statistics.

Gamers aren't the only ones who want to see casino doors open. Maryland could see a $250 million hit because its revenue from casinos and lottery games has plummeted due to the coronavirus, Lottery and Gaming Control Agency Director Gordon Medenica said late last month.

When the doors open, MGM has an extensive plan in place. Here's a look at what the casino operator has in mind in its seven-point safety plan:

1. Screening, Temperature Checks and Employee Training: Extensive employee protocols will be put in place including screening questions, employee temperature checks and training programs on health and safety protocols.

2. Mandatory Masks and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): While guests will be strongly encouraged to wear masks in public areas, employees will be required to wear an approved mask while working at MGMr properties.

3. Physical Distancing: MGM will implement 6-foot physical distancing policies throughout the resort with floor guides to assist and remind guests.

4. Hand Washing and Enhanced Sanitation: Guests visiting MGM resorts will find easy access to custom-built hand-washing stations and hand sanitizer throughout the property.

5. HVAC Controls and Air Quality: Rigorous measures have been taken to provide as much outside air circulation as MGM can throughout their buildings and guest rooms with air filters that meet or exceed published standards.

6. Incidence Response Protocol: If a guest or employee tests positive for the virus, MGM will activate protocols and leverage their trained staff to respond quickly so exposed areas are thoroughly sanitized in the event of an incident.

7. Digital Innovations: MGM will put the arrival experience into the hands of the customers, enabling them to complete the check-in process themselves, from beginning to end. Guests will no longer need to wait in line, if they so choose. For guests without smart phones or who prefer not to use self-check-in, MGM will have a line-reduced environment designed with customers in mind.
